Why Horses?

Stories of harm in our lives often come in the midst of relationship which causes us to develop strategic ways to protect the deep hurt within. Healing often comes from a safe connected relationship. Our brains and our bodies are committed to protect that which has been hurt. Yet we yearn to be seen, heard, valued and understood but it feels like so much risk. It can be hard to find a safe place to heal. Horses are uniquely made to help you heal. They are able to help us understand our emotional needs and our physical reaction to trauma. Horses brains and bodies often react similarly to ours.  They are able to help us see and communicate more clearly, help us see our boundaries or lack of, they help us see our body energy, body regulation, and our brain integration with feedback that is nonjudgmental and honest. They help us to have the courage to re-engage, explore, and heal.   Horses allow us to not only heal psychologically but also physically where our bodies hold trauma deep within. These embodied memories are  why you can smell a smell, hear a sound, or see something

that triggers a bodily response wrapped in past trauma. Therapy with a horse goes beyond talk therapy to experientially work out our woundings and find help in these areas:

  • Assertiveness and independence

  • Confidence and  self esteem

  • Developing and maintaining relationships

  • Emotional and social awareness

  • Empathy

  • Impulse control

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Social skills

  • Trust in others

  • Trust in self

  • Leadership skills and many more.

  • Reducing anxiety and helping those with depression to somatically increase energy.

  • Learning to trust and find your voice.

  • ETC.
